2011 was a good year of carving with tutoring by Curt Salter of Harkers Island and Tony Bua of Vilas, N.C. I am learning skills but also many of my shorebird carvings are from my own photos from Rachel Carson Reserve.

2010 Birds

A hummingbird for my sister Shirley and some of my other birds for the year. Besides many other carvings, I helped as the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild helped youth carve 125 birds thru the year. Well worth the effort.

2009 Carvings

A few birds from 20009

Some 2008 Decoys

I do 25 to 50 waterbirds each year--these are some from 08

The Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild is a group of over 300 members dedicated to preservation of the heritage and craft of decoy carving. This includes many efforts to pass these skills and reverence for wildlife to future generations.

Kids Carving---the 3rd Saturday of each month except December from 10 am to 12 noon--school age children are taught to carve and paint minature decoys or shorebirds--usually in one session. Please call the guild the week prior to the session to let us know you wish to attend so we can insure we have enough members to assist your child.

Kids Painting---At the festival the first weekend in every December children paint an already carved minature decoy. In 2008, our pediatric practice will sponsor this event.

Kids Day---a Saturday at the guild building devoted to exhibits and wildlfe education with many fun activities for young people. See details on the guild website for dates and other info.
